Care Tips

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove debris and accumulated dirt from the floor.
  • Never use a wet mop, or attempt cleaning a hardwood floor with water.
  • Water can dull your floor’s finish and permanently damage the wood.
  • Although hardwood floors can be scratched, any scratches to the finished top layer are usually easy to repair.
  • Over time, sunlight will change the color of most stained hardwood flooring to some degree.
  • Hardwood floor finishes can be restored to their original luster.

Vinyl Care

Routine Maintenance

Although vinyl flooring surfaces are designed to withstand routine household wear, they will lose their brilliant shine if they are repeatedly subject to sand and dirt – especially in heavily traveled areas. Frequent sweeping will prevent abrasive action and help prolong your floor’s built-in shine.

Sweeping. Surface dirt can be easily removed with a broom, vacuum cleaner, or damp mop.

Washing. Use a sponge mop and vinyl floor cleaner, following packaged directions. Do not flood the floor. Loosen ground-in dirt with a soft brush. Do not use scouring powder or other abrasive materials which may harm the surface.

Laminate Care

Most cleaning solutions, or soaps, are alkaline. Alkaline substances can etch the plastic top layer of plastic laminate, depending upon how strong they are and how long they are in contact with the laminate.

New laminate countertops can be damaged by residual soap which is not rinsed off a countertop! For example, let’s say you inadvertently leave some soap or cleaning solution on a countertop. Then you set a glass or a plate, which is wet, onto the countertop. The moisture on the bottom of the glass and/or plate can reactivate the soap. Hours later you move the glass or plate and see a ring. Try as you may, the ring does not rinse or wipe off. The solution: Always rinse off laminate countertops with clean water after washing.

Ceramic Tile Care: Resistant and Natural

Ultimately, ceramic tile is a functional and practical choice for floors, countertops, or walls. Tiles offer versatility in application as well as beauty from their design potential.

The Advantages

  • Durable – professionally installed ceramic tiles outperform and outlast just about every other floor covering material created for a similar application.
  • Easy care – glazed ceramic tiles resist odors, stains and dirt, and they can be cleaned easily with a sponge or a damp mop, and most ordinary household cleaners.
  • Scratch-resistant – tiles with a PEI rating over 3 are very resistant to scratches and scuff marks.
  • Resistant to fire – ceramic tiles will not burn or give off toxic fumes.
  • Water-resistant – glazed ceramic tiles will not absorb moisture, meaning that common liquid spills in the kitchen are of little concern.

Care Tips

  • Clean your tiles with a broom or a steam vac. Caution: Uncovered suction cups can quickly scratch up your tiles.
  • Tiles can be cleaned with water and a special, mild cleaner.

Carpet Care

Use Entry Mats
Think of entry mats as a simple way to protect your investment. Place mats, such as 3M™ Dirt Stop mats, inside and outside entrances to trap soil before it tracks into your home. If you use them, you will track much less dirt and sand onto your new carpet. This not only keeps your carpet looking cleaner, it also helps protect the fibers from abrasion and dulling. Keeping dirt away from your carpet is the best way to maintain its appearance and value.

Alter Traffic Patterns
Rearranging your furniture periodically changes the traffic patterns to distribute use more evenly. Heavy furniture crushes carpet pile. If you do rearrange your tables and sofas, you probably will see deep indentations in the carpet where the furniture legs were resting. To solve the problem, spray a small amount of water on the affected area and use a pile grooming brush available from your carpet retailer to lift the crushed pile.

Avoid Contact with Color-destroying Products
Some household chemicals, medications and cosmetics can permanently stain or remove color from your carpet. These household chemicals often are the culprits of “mystery stains” because they may not discolor the carpet for several days or weeks.

Vacuum Regularly
Vacuuming cannot wear out your carpet, but soil can so vacuum regularly. Even with entry mats, eventually dirt and grit can become embedded in your carpet’s pile. When that happens, your carpet will become discolored and matted. Up to 80% of the soil in carpet is of the dry particulate type that can be removed with a vacuum cleaner.

Daily vacuuming is recommended for high-traffic areas with seven passes of the vacuum cleaner over each section of carpet. For light-traffic areas, the recommendation is weekly vacuuming with three passes over each carpet section.

  • Resistant to stains
  • Resistant to scratches
  • Fire resistant
  • Not faded by sunlight
  • Resistant to slipping
  • Easy to keep clean

Unglazed – No glazing or coating is applied to this type of tile. Colors are uniform throughout the tiles which results in a durability that resists the effects of heavily trafficked areas.
